Fondazione Di Mario ONLUS is one of the three important research groups on orphan diseases, together with Istituto Tumori Toscano and Istituto di Fisiologia Clinica of the CNR in Pisa, which have organised their own laboratories at the "Toscana Life Sciences" Scientific Park.
TLS is a non-profit foundation established in 2004 that has been operative since September 2005. It seeks to facilitate the business start-up process and support applied research on orphan diseases. The founding members include the Tuscany Region, Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena and the Province of Siena, as well as the five universities in Tuscany and Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Senese. A modern bio-incubator completely equipped to host a hi-tech biotech company has been created, and a rigorous evaluation process for scientific projects is carried out by a commission of international experts.
The research activities of Fondazione Umberto Di Mario ONLUS at TLS, coordinated by Francesco Dotta, Associate Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Siena, are carried out alongside the organisation of cultural learning events like the seminar entitled "The Hedgehog pathway: interface between neuronal development and tumourigenesis", held by Prof. Alberto Gulino, Full Professor of General Pathology at La Sapienza University in Rome and Director of the Molecular Oncology Laboratory and member of the Scientific Committee of Fondazione Umberto Di Mario ONLUS.
